ADM Gary Barclay Chief of Public Affairs

Greetings and felicitations,

October has started off with a bang for Starfleet Command with many of our members attending THE OFFICIAL STAR TREK CONVENTION Celebrating the 45th Anniversary of Star Trek. The Chicago Star Trek Convention September 30-October 2, 2011 was at The Westin O'Hare Hotel which was Standing Room Only, when Leonard Nimoy gave a moving look at his life. They showed the Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song [Official Alternate Version] with Leonard Nimoy in it before he came out on the stage. Here are some of the highlights of the convention:

Caution: This video is a bit randy.

This is me portraying Spock in a Biohazard suit from the Star Trek: TOS episode "The Naked Time". It is the one where Spock goes to an ice planet and Sulu becomes infected and runs around with a sword. I handed out many of my Scotty Dollars which has our Starfleet Command information on them as I promoted our club. The Chicago Daily Herald has pictures of me in 3 of 12 and 6 of 12 @

This is the USS Davenport CO Commander Fred "Darius" Monfeli, with new recruit, Cadet Joe, are surrounded by Klingons, as a Starfleet Commander looks on from Left. The KAG Klingon delegation hails from the part of the Klingon Empire known as Southern Lower Michigan Creation Chicago Con, 10-2011.

This is Fleet Captain Olson with Chicago art student and "Cadet", Shelby, at the Creation Leonard Nimoy Con, 10-2011 in Chicago. I was very proud to see the great effort that Fleet Captain Olson had put into promoting Starfleet Command with flyers and talking to people in general. Starbase 03 is in good hands.

Charles Napier Passes Away At 75

Napier played the hippie Adam in the Star Trek: TOS episode “The Way to Eden” and General Rex Denning in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Little Green Man”.

I had the honor getting to know him when he was the star assigned to my banquet table at the celebration for James Doohan receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He had regaled us with many stories. My favorite was when he was working at a parking lot and seeing Jack Nicholson day after day. One day, Jack asked him “How’s it going?” Charles used some colorful vernacular and stated that he needed an acting job. Jack then informed his assistant in a colorful vernacular to get him a job. I saw him the next day and asked him to say the line. He replied: “Gonna crack my knuckles and jump for joy. I got a clean bill of health from Doctor McCoy”. I said that was my favorite line in that episode. Then I paid for a signed picture from him. His said “I like you”. He then went on to sign and give me an additional picture. He will be missed.

The USS Gorkon supported "Bob Gregory’s Coats for Kids" for the 2nd year in a row.  This year we collected 58 coats.  The coats ranged from infant to adult sizes.   We began gathering the coats early in the Spring. Gorkon crew and now SB6 FO Bryan Detamore (who was on the USS Gorkon when the coats were collected) is pictured with various coats that the crew collected.  When we were done and put them into the SUV the entire back of the SUV was stuffed full!  There will be many smiles from children and teens who will be receiving the coats on the 29th of October at the Indiana State Fair Grounds.  Many of the children would not have a winter coat if not for this program.  Another great thing about this program is there is no qualification needed to receive a coat other than the child must have an adult with them.  No muss no fuss, just a great coat to keep a child warm during the cold weather months.
