ADM Gary Barclay

Chief of Public Affairs Starfleet Command Q1

Greetings and felicitations,

MAY

According to the early Roman calendar, May was the third month. Later, the ancient Romans used January 1 for the beginning of their year, and May became the fifth month. May has always had 31 days.

On June 8th / 9th Fleet Commander Roy Jackson and I will be in Nashville at the 25th Anniversary Creation Con. What are we doing there you ask? We will be staffing the Starfleet Command table in the dealer’s room. Not only do we want you to stop by if you can, but we need your help. I want to set up a 22” monitor with images being displayed of the ships in SFC doing events, the ship logos, ect… If you are reading this, I need you to send me a few photos so I can start getting this together. Even if your ship logo is all you have, I want it! Don’t plan to do it later, if you’re reading this, do it now before you forget!

The Right Place at the Right Time

Captain Rose Compton

USS Mighty Mississippi

The joint meeting for the staff and members for SB 03 was held on April 28th, 2012, 1:00 PM, in the usual location, at the 'Moline Public Library' in Dewey's Copper Café. Several members of SFCQ1, Starbase 03, get together each month to discuss what our individual ships are doing and to find adventures or outings we can participate in together. Little did we know, when we walked in the door that afternoon, what was in store for us.

On this particular day, we had to look no further than the lobby of the library for an outing. Popular Astronomy Club (Quad-Cities) was also hosting an outing. One of the members, Mitchell, visited with us as we held our meeting and invited us to stay and join in their outing.

He certainly didn't have to invite twice. J

For younger members, it was learning about outer

space and what goes where. To do this, they used a

Star Trek puzzle and they also had an opportunity to

make a meteor using dry ice.

Popular Astronomy also displayed a chance for everyone to discover what their weight would be on different planets and the moon.

A large telescope had been set up on an outer deck

for later viewing, but the over cast day prevented it's

use.

Guest speaker for the event was Dr. Robert Mutel, a Professor of Astronomy at the University of Iowa. Before the lecture, Captain's William Van Brunt and Mike House were honored with a bit of a private audience with Professor Mutel.

For me, the best part of the outing was the lecture.

'Alien Worlds: The Search for Life on Extra-Solar

Planets'. Dr. Mutel was a wonderful speaker, keeping

the lecture entertaining as well as educational. He kept

the group engaged with questions and facts as well as a

very good power point presentation. More details can Cpt. William Van Bunt
