WillyCon at Wayne, NE:
By Sharon Boren (USS Iowa)

WillyCon is a funky little convention sponsored by Wayne State Collegeís Science Fiction and Fantasy Club. Having no convention center in the small Nebraska town, the convention is limited to campus resources and usually takes over the campusí Studentsí Center for the entire weekend. Due to the campus location, alcoholic beverages and real world weapons are prohibited. The Clubís faculty advisor and the students organize and run the convention. The students do NOT get a pass from their college workload or other obligations. Some of the students involved have never attended a convention before, and therefore, their first con experience and exposure to fandom is WillyCon weekend!

Like most fan run conventions, WillyCon features an author and artist guests of honor, a fan guest of honor, and also exclusive to the this convention, an alumni guest of honor. There is also the usual Art Show, and a vendorís room, with a snack filled consuite. Meals (Lunch and supper) are provided for a cost at the campus cafeteria; prices run about $6-$8 depending on the menu. A pancake feed is also available for a fee for guests looking for breakfast, or for those staying at the Super8 in town, there is a free breakfast, too.

Programming at the convention runs the gambit from science fiction to fantasy to Anime and everything in between. Dungeons & Dragons, World of Warcraft, and other gaming opportunities exist throughout the weekend for those interested. For late night gamers, the collage has a ďHibernation ChamberĒ where gamers can campout for free.

This year marks WillyConís fifteenth year in existence, making it Nebraskaís longest running convention to date. Author guest of honor will be Anne Bishop, and Artist guest of honor will be Peri Charlifu. Pre-registration is $20 or $25 at the door for the entire weekend. The Super8 is reasonably priced, running about $120 or more for the weekend, depending on the number of people per room.

If you get an opportunity to go west this year, give WillyCon a try. Itís good clean fun! My Klingon ship, IKV Raptorís Heart will be hosting a Klingon reception on Friday night and also 2 panel discussions on Saturday. Dates for Willy Con 15 are April 5-7, 2013. Preregistration is available at the convention website: www.willycon.com or at www.wildcat.wsc.edu/clubs/willycon. Room reservations at the Super8 can be found on the Motelís website online.
