Nearly Half A Lifetime In Fleet

by ADM Richard A Pinsky

Hard to believe that I joined SFC in January 1992. I went to the Drawbridge Inn in Kentucky with a colleague from work. This was my first convention and it was an honor to meet Marina SIrtis, the first of many actors I would meet.

Upon entering the dealers’ room, I purchased an off-the-rack Next Gen command top. Immediately after that, I joined the USS Yorktown out of Cincinnati. A month later, while a student at Wright State, I found out that a new ship was forming closer to home. On March 8, 1992 (my 21st birthday), the USS Bismarck was commissioned at the Middletown Ohio library.

Over the next 17 years, I worked my way through the ranks to serve as Bismarck’s Chief Ops and Captain. During my two-year term as Captain, I also served as Deputy Commandant, Starfleet Academy. I chose not to run again for Captain in late 2010, as a win would have prevented me from accepting the position of Commandant. That term began in January 2011.

During my time as Deputy Commandant, I rewrote all the cadet exams. As Commandant, I continue to review the questions and tweak them as needed. I am happy to take any suggestions that people have concerning the exams and the Academy as a whole.

Could I pass as Riker’s younger brother?

Chief of Public Affairs Starfleet Command Q1

Greetings and felicitations,

April was the second month in an early Roman calendar, but became the fourth when the ancient Romans started using January as the first month. The Romans called the month April is. It may come from a word meaning 'to open', or it may come from Aphrodite, the Greek name for the goddess of love. April Fools' Day, or All Fools' Day, is the first day of April. No one knows where the custom began, but some historians believe it started in France. They had a New Year's festival that was celebrated from March 25 to April 1, and they would then exchange gifts. But, later, King James IV changed the holiday to January 1 for New Years. The people that still celebrated it April 1 were called 'April fish' and sent mock presents. April Fools' Day may also be related to the ancient Roman spring festival Hilaria, which celebrates the resurrection of the god Attis.
